Are you thinking about trying parasailing while visiting beautiful Destin, Florida? Parasailing is a fun, safe, and affordable activity for the whole family to enjoy together. You will make memories to treasure for a lifetime while enjoying a birds-eye view of Destin.
Parasailing is such a popular activity in Destin that often you will see multiple parachutes in the air at once but you can always tell which one is Pelican Adventures by looking for the bright yellow smiley face. Our customers love the smiley parachute and it looks great in photos.
If you’re considering a parasailing adventure in Destin or you have some more practical questions before booking, this post of Frequently Asked Questions will cover everything you need to know about parasailing with us at Pelican Adventures.
Is Parasailing Scary?
No. Parasailing is actually a very calm and relaxing activity. First-time parasailers are often surprised to find that it feels quieter and less windy in the sky then it even did on the boat. It is quiet enough in the air to easily have a conversation. Most people who are scared to parasail at first, find their fears immediately alleviated as they lift off from the boat. The terms serene and peaceful or “floating on air” are often used to describe the experience in the sky.
Is Parasailing Safe?
Yes, parasailing is an extremely safe activity as long as you are using a reputable company with an experienced captain and crew. At Pelican Adventures all of our equipment is regularly serviced and inspected to ensure the highest safety standards for our guests.
Our parasailing captains are US Coast Guard licensed in addition to both captain and crew being specifically trained in all aspects of parasailing and flight procedures. Our captains and crew are required to keep their CPR and First Aid certifications current and submit to random drug screening.
Pelican Adventures is one of the longest operating companies in Destin and we have taken people on thousands of flights with a 100% safety record so you are in very good hands! Your safety is our #1 priority.
What are the Age and Weight Restrictions for Parasailing?
Children must be at least 6 years old and 50 pounds to go parasailing. The combined weight of the 2 or 3 people flying must be under 450 pounds. Per our Insurance, pregnant women are not allowed on the boat.
Can I go on the Boat Just to Watch?
We allow spectators on the boat for a nominal fee as long as there is space available. Children must be at least 3 years old and 30 pounds to go on the boat.
How Long is the Entire Parasailing Excursion?
Your parasailing flight will last about 10-12 minutes from take-off to landing but you should expect your entire parasailing excursion on the boat to last 1-1.5 hours. The time on the boat is a beautiful part of the parasailing adventure where you will experience a scenic boat ride through beautiful Destin Harbor on the way out and back into our docks. Be sure to look out for dolphins. You never know when you will see them!
In addition to the time on the boat, please check-in 45 minutes prior to departure and leave plenty of time for traffic and parking.
How Many People can Parasail at Once?
We normally fly 2 or 3 parasailers on each flight depending how many is in your party. Singles are allowed to book but will be flying with someone else on the boat unless they meet the minimum weight restriction to fly solo.
What is Take-off and Landing like?
Take off and landing happens right from a platform at the back of the boat. Our parasail mate will help you get in your special parasailing seated harness during the boat ride out. When it’s your turn, all you have to do is sit down on the platform while he hooks you to the parachute to prepare you for lift off.
Once you are ready, they will let the rope out which slowly lifts you into the air. When it’s time to come in, they will pull the rope in and you put your feet out and land softly again on the boat. It’s a calm and easy experience from start to finish.
Will I get in the Water?
It’s up to you if you want to get wet on your parasailing flight. Towards the end of the flight, the captain usually slows the boat down to allow you to dip your legs in the water before lifting back up. But just let the captain know if you want to stay dry and they will skip the water dip.
What Should I Wear?
You can wear whatever you feel best in on your parasailing trip. If you want to get dipped in the water then we recommend swim shorts and/or a swimsuit. But if it’s a chilly day or you just want to stay dry, feel free to wear pants, a sweater, or whatever you are most comfortable in.
What Should I Bring?
You are welcome to bring a drink if you want but please no alcohol, glass or coolers. Don’t forget your sunblock!
Can I Bring my Camera or Phone on the Flight with me?
You are welcome to bring your camera and/or phone with you on the boat and in the air but this is done at your own risk.
If you take your camera in the air with you, we recommend at least a wrist strap and a waterproof case if you are planning to be dipped. Ask about a photo package if you would rather us take the photos for you!
What if the Weather is Bad?
The parasailing captain reviews the weather and surf conditions daily before any boats go out. If he determines that the weather is unsafe for parasailing then he will cancel the trip. You will be offered a chance to reschedule or a full refund will be provided if your travel plans don’t allow it.
For this reason, we recommend planning your parasailing trip early in your vacation so there is time to reschedule in the unlikely event of weather cancellations. We also would encourage you to book an earlier flight as most of our inclement weather and higher winds happens in the afternoon.
How Many People are on the Boat?
Our parasailing boats hold 12 people in addition to the captain and mate. So you will be on the boat with other people besides your party. It’s a great time to meet other Destin visitors and share information and tips.
Do you offer Private Parasailing Trips?
We are happy to accommodate a private parasailing excursion if you want to go with just your family or group of up to 12 people as long as there is availability (book early!) A private parasailing trip is a fun way to enjoy a special occasion like a birthday, anniversary, family reunion, or even a corporate party.
